UPDATED: Elon Musk has confirmed reports he secretly had twins nearly a year go.

Elon Musk reportedly had twins with top Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis in November of 2021.

According to court documents obtained by Business Insider, the Tesla boss and Neuralink co-founder and his 36-year-old colleague at his neurotechnology firm welcomed the tots into the world just weeks before Musk and his on-off partner Grimes welcomed their second together via surrogate.

The pair filed a petition to a Texas court requesting the twins “have their father’s last name” and part of their mother’s last name in their middle name in April. The request was approved the following month.

According to her LinkedIn profile (per Reuters), Zilis is the director of operations and special projects at Neuralink. She started working there in May 2017, the same month she was named a project director in Artificial Intelligence at Tesla, where she worked until 2019.

Zilis also serves as a board member at AI research firm OpenAI, which was co-founded by Musk.

News of Musk's latest twins means the 51-year-old multi-billionaire now has nine children.

The world's richest man, who's said to have a net worth of US$214 billion (S$300 bil), has X Æ A-12, two, and Exa Dark Sideræl, seven months, with pop star Grimes. He also has five children — twin sons Griffin and Xavier, 18, triplets Kai, Saxon and Damian, 16 — with ex-wife, Canadian author Justine Wilson.

The SpaceX founder and Wilson, who wedded in 2000 and split in 2008, also had son Nevada Alexander in 2002 but he died of sudden infant death syndrome at only 10 weeks.

In April, Xavier filed for a gender change and a new name Vivian Jenna Wilson, taking her mother's last name. The petition read: “I no longer live with or wish to be related to my biological father in any way, shape or form."

Although Vivian's father has insisted he "absolutely supports" transgender people, he struggles with preferred pronouns. In 2020, he tweeted: “I absolutely support trans, but all these pronouns are an aesthetic nightmare."

He'd also caused outrage when he posted that "pronouns suck", with many branding the tweet transphobic.

Musk, who recently terminated his US$44 billion offer to buy Twitter, confirmed the news of his twins by tweeting, “Doing my best to help the underpopulation crisis. A collapsing birth rate is the biggest danger civilization faces by far.”
