Johnny Depp’s Ex-Girlfriend Ellen Barkin Testifies: He Was Jealous And Controlling

Ellen Barkin claimed Johnny Depp was "always" drinking and once "threw a wine bottle" at her during their relationship.

The Animal Kingdom actress, who dated Depp "for several months" in the 1990s, took to the stand Thursday (May 19) in the ongoing defamation suit between the Pirates of the Caribbean actor and his ex-wife Amber Heard.

In a pre-recorded deposition recorded in 2019, Barkin, 68, spoke about her friendship with Depp, which started in 1990. They would appear together in 1998's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

"We just developed a friendship over time that lasted maybe 10 years [or] a little less," she testified. The friendship turned sexual after Barkin moved from New York to Los Angeles in 1994.

Barkin claimed Johnny was "drunk a lot of the time" in an "out of control" way and often "tripping" or under the influence of hallucinogenics. On one occasion, he even allegedly threw a wine bottle at her in a Las Vegas hotel room during an argument with friends. But it didn't hit her or anyone else, she added.

She said: “I don’t know why he threw the bottle. It was more like a toss.”

Barkin claimed Depp was "controlling" and "demanding" and branded him a "jealous man" who constantly quizzed her on her whereabouts.

"I had a scratch on my back that once got him very, very angry because he insisted it came from me having sex with a person who wasn't him," she said. 

The court also heard testimony from Dr. Alan Blaustein, Depp's former psychiatrist, who said in his taped declaration that the Alice in Wonderland star had struggled to stay sober as his marriage to Heard disintegrated.

He said: "He used drugs to cope with psychic wounds."

The psychiatrist, who sat for his deposition in January, noted Depp felt "frustration, impatience and anger" with the Aquaman actress during their marriage, and admitted there were issues in their relationship before they tied the knot in 2015.

He said: “[Their relationship was] a lot of love, a lot of disappointment, a lot of fear."
