Dwayne Johnson has finally confirmed his return as Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs to the Fast & Furious franchise — and what better way to mark the occasion than to announce a new standalone film?

Johnson shared the news on Thursday (June 1) by posting a video on Instagram with the caption: “Your reactions around the world to Hobbs’ return in Fast X have blown us away. The next Fast & Furious film you’ll see the legendary lawman in will be the Hobbs movie that will serve as a fresh, new chapter & set up for Fast X: Part II.”

Longtime Fast and Furious Chris Morgan will write the untitled the off-shoot's script. No director is attached at the moment.

Johnson famously walked away from the Fast & Furious franchise after falling out with Vin Diesel, the carmagedoon series’ star and producer. He played Hobbs in four Fast & Furious sequels, beginning with 2011’s Fast Five, and one spin-off, 2019’s Hobbs & Shaw, in which he teamed up with Jason Statham.

Just when you thought Johnson has moved on, he appeared in a mid-credits sequence in Fast X. That film’s director Louis Leterrier said he brokered the deal for Johnson’s cameo.

Apparently, Diesel and Johnson have buried the hatchet.

“Last summer Vin Diesel and I put all the past behind us,” Johnson wrote in the Instagram post. “We’ll lead with brotherhood and resolve — and always take care of the franchise, characters & fans that we love. I’ve built my career on an ‘audience first’ mentality and that will always serve as my north star.”

Fast X is now in cinemas; Fast X: Part II is slated for 2025.
