Cillian Murphy Reveals This Behind-The-Scenes Quirk On A Christopher Nolan Film Set

What does it take to act in a Christopher Nolan movie?

It appears that not only do they have to be very good at it (obvs), they must also have a large bladder.

That’s according to Cillian Murphy, the veteran of six Nolan films, including the latest, Oppenheimer, where Murphy plays J Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb.

When asked by Collider’s Steve Weinstraub what Nolan fans would find most surprising on a Nolan film set, Murphy replied, matter-of-factly. “He’s not that sympathetic to toilet breaks. I’ll leave that there.”

It isn’t clear if Murphy was joking or not, but Nolan is known for running a strict set.

Anne Hathaway, who starred in The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar, once alleged in Variety’s ‘Actors on Actors’ video interview that the director didn't allow chairs on his sets.

The no-chair rule was later refuted by Nolan’s reps.

“For the record, the only things banned from [Christopher Nolan’s] sets are cell phones (not always successfully) and smoking (very successfully),” the rep said in a statement. “The chairs Anne was referring to are the directors’ chairs clustered around the video monitor, allocated on the basis of hierarchy, not physical need. Chris chooses not to use his but has never banned chairs from the set. Cast and crew can sit wherever and whenever they need and frequently do.”

Interestingly, Nolan doesn’t own a smartphone; he reportedly uses a flip phone.

“My personal choice is about how involved I get,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s about the level of distraction. If I’m generating my material and writing my own scripts, being on a smartphone all day wouldn’t be very useful for me.

The Dunkirk director previously told People “I'm easily distractible so I don't really want to have access to the internet every time when I'm bored.

“I do a lot of my best thinking in those kind of in-between moments that people now fill with online activity, so it benefits me.”

In the same interview with the outlet, he revealed his contacting people via e-mail.

“I just have never been particularly interested in communicating with people in that way,” he said. “I prefer just calling people from a landline."
