Christopher Nolan’s Tenet will open in cinemas in Singapore on Aug 27— a week before the US — according to Warner Bros’ new release strategy revealed yesterday (July 27).
The studio announced that Tenet will begin its global theatrical rollout at the end of August in 70 overseas territories, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Russia and the United Kingdom. The movie will open in the US on Sept 3. (Scroll to the bottom for the complete schedule.)
Last week, Warner Bros pulled Tenet from its release calendar and said it would consider premiering it overseas first before the US. The staggered schedule is not unprecedented: Thor, The Adventures of Tintin and Battleship opened in several key foreign markets a few weeks before their domestic drop.
Even then, the studio has reservations about showing Tenet outside of the US first. Besides piracy, it’s concerned that spoilers could ruin the element of surprise and dampen demand to catch the highly secretive movie in the US. (But it doesn’t matter if Tenet is as good as, if not better than, it’s hyped; look at Avengers: Endgame.)
With the new Tenet release date, the 10th anniversary re-release of Inception has also been pushed back, from July 30 to Aug 13. The Leonardo DiCaprio-starring sci-fi epic will also include a sneak peek from Tenet. (We hear it’s totally new content, and not the same footage that was tagged to the IMAX screenings of Birds of Prey.)
