Principal photography on Furiosa, the highly-anticipated prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road has commenced.

Chris Hemsworth, who stars in the George Miller-helmed project, made the announcement via Instagram, sharing a picture of the production clapperboard against a blue sky (is it real or a backdrop? Hard to tell…)

“A new journey in the Mad Max saga begins,” he wrote in the caption. Filming is in New South Wales, Australia

The prequel follows the early days of Imperator Furiosa — the one-armed renegade warrior previously played by Charlize Theron in Fury Road — charting her journey from the Green Place to the hell of Immortan Joe’s The Citadel.

Queen’s Gambit’s Anya Taylor-Joy will play the younger Furiosa, with Hemsworth reportedly as one of the villains. (Is he responsible for Furiosa losing her right arm?) The movie, which is slated to hit cinemas in May 2024, also stars C.B. Strike’s Tom Burke.

Fury Road — the fourth chapter in the post-apocalyptic franchise that began with 1979’s Mad Max, followed by 1981's Road Warrior and 1985's Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome) was nominated for 10 Oscars, winning six for Editing, Costume Design, Makeup & Hairstyling, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing and Production Design. It grossed US$375 million (S$516 mil) worldwide on a reported US$150 million budget.

Hemsworth will next be seen in the Netflix thriller Spider-Head, due June 17, and Thor: Love and Thunder, premiering in cinemas on July 7; Taylor-Joy is currently in the Viking revenge epic, The Northman. Miller’s new film, Three Thousand Years of Longing, a fantasy starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba, had its world premiere at the recent Cannes Film Festival and will open commercially here on Sept 1.
