Bob The Cat, the ginger feline star of A Street Cat Named Bob, died on Monday (June 15), at the age of 14. (In human years, he was 72.)

Bob has been credited with saving the life of former London drug addict James Bowen. Bowen took in Bob after finding him abandoned and injured on the streets in 2007. The duo then caught the news media’s eye when they teamed up to sell The Big Issue to raise funds for the homeless.

Their adventures formed the basis of a 2012 book A Street Cat Named Bob, which sold more than 40 million copies worldwide. It spawned three sequels, The World According to Bob, A Gift from Bob and The Little Book of Bob.

The first book was adapted into a movie, 2016’s A Street Cat Named Bob, which starred Luke Treadaway as Bowen and Bob as himself. A second feature, A Gift from Bob, is currently in post-production for release in 2021.

Bowen. in statement via Hodder & Stoughton, the publisher of the books, said, “Bob saved my life. It’s as simple as that. He gave me so much more than companionship. With him at my side, I found a direction and purpose that I’d been missing.

“The success we achieved together through our books and films was miraculous. He’s met thousands of people, touched millions of lives. There’s never been a cat like him. And never will again. I feel like the light has gone out in my life. I will never forget him.”
