Blumhouse's Horror-Comedy Freaky To Be Released In Singapore In NC16 & M18 Versions

The NC16 version will have "minimal cuts".

When Freaky, the latest movie from Blumhouse Productions, the makers of Happy Death Day  and The Invisible Man, opens in Singapore cinemas on Thursday (Nov 12), moviegoers will have a choice of watching either a NC16 or M18 version.

Freaky, a Freaky Friday meets Friday the 13th slasher flick, stars Kathryn Newton (Blockers) as a 17-year-old high schooler who switches body with a serial killer known as The Butcher (Vince Vaughn). Hilarity and bloodshed ensue.

The movie, directed by Christopher Landon (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, Happy Death Day), is originally rated M18 for “for violence and coarse language”. According to the press release from distributor UIP, the NC16 version has “minimal edits”.

With the simultaneous dual ratings, 16- and 17-year-old genre fans will not be left out from watching this macabre body-swapping tale on the big screen. has only seen the M18 version, not the NC16 one, which we imagine will have the gorier, cover-your-eyes bits (including a death scene involving a circular saw) trimmed off.

This is not the first time a movie has been released with two different ratings simultaneously. In 2015, the Japanese fantasy Attack on Titan was released in NC16 and M18 versions; in 2019, Hellboy, starring David Harbor, came out in a family-friendly PG13 and for-hardcore-fans M18 editions..

The M18 version of Freaky will be shown as Cathay Cineplexes in AMK Hub, Causeway Point, Cineleisure, Downtown East, JEM, The Cathay, Parkway Parade and West Mall; Golden Village cineplexes in City Square, Funan, Great World City, Suntec City and VivoCity; Shaw Theatres Lido; Filmgarde Bugis+; WE Cinemas in Clementi; and Eagle Wings at KAP Mall.

The NC16 version will be at Golden Village cineplexes in Bedok, Bishan, Jurong Point, Paya Lebar, Plaza, Tampines, Tiong Bahru and Yishun; Shaw Theatres in Jcube, Jewel, Paya Lebar, Quarter, Seletar and Waterway Point; Filmgarde Bugis+, Century Square and Kallang Leisure Park; and WE Cinemas in Clementi.

By the way, if you’re 18 and your date is 17, which version of Freaky will you guys watch?
