Bill Hader Stopped Signing Autographs After A Messed-Up Encounter With Star Wars Fan

Bill Hader refuses to sign autographs for fans, especially Star Wars fans.

The 44-year-old Barry star, who was a voice consultant for droid BB-8 alongside Ben Schwartz in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens. said he used to scrawl his moniker onto merchandise related to the film when asked, but has refrained from doing so.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the former Saturday Night Live regular said: "Autograph people don't like me. I won't sign things. I used to sign stuff, and then one time I saw somebody and they had their kid come up to me to sign a BB-8 thing and it was three in the morning.

"I was leaving the Inside Out premiere and then we went to an after-party thing and it was super late and this guy kept his kid up all night.

"[He was like], 'Go over there so he'll sign it so I can sell it online.'

"And I was like 'That's f***** up!'

"And so now, I just kind of blanket, like, I'm not signing any of this s***!'"

Hader added while it is "very sweet" that director J J Abrahams attributed the BB-8 character to him, he still can't take credit for the part even though he served as a voice consultant for the part.

He explained "I came in and did like voice stuff for it that didn’t work. Then, he brought me in later and said, ‘Hey, do you want to do this.’ It was like a... talk box thing and then I did that.

"And the reason he hasn’t had me come back is because anybody can do that... it’s like a machine that you can operate."

Hader isn't the only actor with a no-autograph policy. Last month Jessica Chastain was capturred in a TikTok video where she turned down a fan to sign a copy of Taylor Jenkins Reid's The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo novel, following the Eyes of Tammy Faye actress' performance in the Broadway revival of A Doll's House at New York's Hudson Theatre.

The Oscar winner has been fan-casted on social media as a major character in the adaptation of Reid's novel. So, it's fan-cast thing, not a real thing.

“I can’t sign that, just because I’m not doing it,” Chastain said to the fan in the clip. (But they did share a wefie, so the fan didn't go home empty-handed.)

The Crimson Peak actress later took to Twitter to explain her action. “I’ve been asked multiple times by fans, to sign books that I’m not attached to contractually," she wrote. "Because it feels wrong, and like I’m taking credit for someone else’s work, I’ll say I can’t sign because I’m not doing it. That doesn’t mean I’ve read a bad script.”
