Just when he thought he was out... they pull him back in. It looks like Ben Affleck is back on Batman duty for the upcoming The Flash movie.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, The Flash director Andy Muschietti said Affleck received the script last week and agreed this week to be part of the movie, which stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen and his titular alter ego.

Affleck played Bruce Wayne and his alter ego Batman in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017’s 2017’s Justice League. He also did a cameo in Suicide Squad. He was also at one point attached to direct and star a standalone Batman movie, but eventually bailed on the project. He passed directing reins to Matt Reeves, with Robert Pattinson stepping into Batman’s shoes (boots).

The Flash will see the speedster superhero travelling to multiple universes where he encounters different versions of The Dark Knight. Besides Affleck’s Batman, Barry will also cross path with Michael Keaton’s Caped Crusader, who donned the cowl and cape for Tim Burton in 1989’s Batman and 1992’s Batman Returns.

On Affleck’s take of Batman, Muschietti said, “His Batman has a dichotomy that is very strong, which is his masculinity — because of the way he looks, and the imposing figure that he has, and his jawline — but he’s also very vulnerable. He knows how to deliver from the inside out, that vulnerability. He just needs a story that allows him to bring that contrast, that balance.”

He added, “He’s a very substantial part of the emotional impact of the movie. The interaction and relationship between Barry and Affleck’s Wayne will bring an emotional level that we haven’t seen before. It’s Barry’s movie, it’s Barry’s story, but their characters are more related than we think. They both lost their mothers to murder, and that’s one of the emotional vessels of the movie. That’s where the Affleck Batman kicks in.”

Muschietti is expected to shed more light on The Flash at this weekend’s DC FanDome. His presentation is penciled in for Aug 22, 11.45am (Pacific Daylight), which is Aug 23, 2.45am in Singapore.
