Zhang Ziyi calls Eva Huang’s acting “one of the most awkward performances”

Chinese actress Eva Huang recently appeared on the talent show The Birth of An Actor, which features different actors pulling off various acting challenges against one another.

In the latest episode, Eva had to reenact a scene from 1994 drama I Have a Date with Spring in which she played a dancer alongside Chai Bi Yun and Yu Ming Jia. However, her performance was panned by the judges. Not only was she criticised for being stiff, her acting was unnatural and lacked chemistry with the other actors.

One of the judges, actress Zhang Ziyi, said that her expression of sadness and pain, during a scene where her child had died, was unconvincing and even bluntly deemed it as “one of the most awkward performances I’ve seen in my life.”

Netizens have also been very harsh with their comments, saying that she was the “worst among the three actors”.

However, Eva did not seem too swayed by these criticisms as she responded to the situation professionally on Weibo yesterday.

“My first appearance on stage was indeed a little overwhelming and I could tell the obvious difference between this and filming on a proper set. I humbly accept the judges’ and the public’s words and advice. As an actor, I will continue working hard to perfect my acting skills, both on set and on stage. I believe that life is always about overcoming new challenges and to never give up, so I will remember that as I take everyone’s encouragement and support into mind,” she wrote.

Eva rose to fame after starring in veteran Chinese actor Stephen Chow's action comedy film Kung Fu Hustle in 2004. When asked about her performance, he merely replied “I am not that familiar with her”, showing that their relationship was still on the rocks after she ended her contract with his company that same year, following a magazine photo shoot that was done without their consent.

The actress tied the knot with Chinese businessman Yang Zi in 2007 and the couple have two sons together.
