Yang Mi’s Company Reportedly Drops $200Mil In Value ’Cos Of Her Divorce From Hawick Lau
Don’t worry, she’s still loaded.
It’s not as if anyone was truly surprised that Chinese actress Yang Mi, 32, and Hongkong actor Hawick Lau, 44, have split after five years of marriage. Rumours that they were headed for a divorce have already been stewing for more than a year, despite the couple having shot down all talk of there being trouble in paradise. It didn't help that the couple barely interacted with each other on social media, unlike say, the reigning couple of online PDA Jay Chou and Hannah Quinlivan.
In fact, the last denial about a split came just two days before the couple made their official divorce announcement on Dec 22. “No [they are not splitting up], such rumours are so senseless,” Yang Mi’s studio had said then. Oops.

In their official joint statement, the couple's management said: “Although the two may no longer be living together as husband and wife, they will act as family members from now on to care for and raise their child. As friends, they also sincerely wish each other the best for the future.”
It’s said that Yang Mi and Hawick actually signed the divorce papers two months ago in Canada but only chose to make the announcement this week because their four-year-old daughter, who’s only known to the media as 'Little Glutinous Rice', is on Christmas break from school and that greatly reduces the chance of her getting photographed by the paparazzi. According to reports, the couple have joint custody of Little Glutinous Rice.
No more a couple
So what is the cause of the split? Some say it’s because of the disparity between their earning power and level of fame. Yang Mi is of course one of China’s biggest stars, her popularity boosted further in recent years ’cos of mega hit drama Eternal Love. Hawick, on the other hand, is known more for allegedly going under the knife to alter his looks and for being veteran Hongkong actor Lau Dan's son. Also in 2017, the actress reportedly made 200mil yuan (S$39mil), which made her the third-highest earning celeb in China that year, while Hawick took home a not shabby but much lesser 75mil yuan.

But it seems the divorce has had a negative impact on Yang Mi’s net worth. The actress is said to sit on the board of nine companies and is worth a reported S$890mil. Her most lucrative company is Jiaxing Media, an entertainment group which manages stars like Dilraba Dilmurat and of course, herself. It’s said that the company grew by 200 per cent in just two years and that in 2017, was worth a whopping 5bil yuan (S$996mil). But this year, because of all the rumours about her divorce and Yang Mi being a permanent fixture in the gossip pages, the company’s net worth reportedly shrank by S$200mil.

She had recently given an interview where she was asked if she reminisces about her past, to which she said that there’s no point to looking back because “everything that has happened, no matter how good or bad, have nothing to do with [her] because they belong to yesterday.” She was also asked if she ever gets affected by the messiness of showbusiness, and her reply? “I never accumulate negativity” adding that she “doesn’t hate anyone”. Netizens are now saying that her answers during the interview, which was conducted before her divorce announcement, actually reveal her innermost thoughts about her marriage.

When asked if it was a third party that caused the split between husband and wife, Hawick’s dad said: “A lot of people have been saying this. Anyway, they are both doing well, there’s nothing wrong.”
Back in the day
Hawick and Yang Mi met when filming TV drama Ru Yi in 2011 and they got married in Bali in Jan 2014. The star-studded wedding reportedly cost (S$3mil) and Little Glutinous Rice was born in June the same year.
