Taiwanese Celeb Ya Tou Mourns Passing Of Grandma, Who Died From COVID-19 Alone In South Korea
The singer-actress said her grandmother was immediately quarantined upon her diagnosis, and eventually passed on with no one by her side.
Taiwanese celeb Yako Chan, who is better known as Ya Tou, took to her Facebook on Monday (Nov 29) to share that her beloved grandmother recently succumbed to COVID-19.
The 33-year-old also revealed that her family was unable to see their grandmother before she passed away due to quarantine restrictions, and that the old lady had died with no one by her side.
“Life is just so impermanent, you’ll never know when it will attack you, catch you by surprise, and leave you filled with regret,” Ya Tou wrote.

“My grandmother contracted COVID-19 in Korea, and developed breathing difficulties. After emergency intubation, she left the world,” Ya Tou added.
In her post, she went on to explain that her family wanted to fly over to visit her grandmother immediately after knowing that she’d contracted COVID-19. However, they were unable to do so since her grandmother was quarantined soon after her diagnosis.
“I don’t know if my grandmother was frightened ‘cos she’s so old, and might not even understand what kind of illness it was. But she must have been very lonely, lying in the hospital bed alone, with no family members by her side. Those who pass away after contracting COVID-19 are immediately cremated…” said Ya Tou, adding: “For the first time, I profoundly understood just how scary COVID-19 is.”
Ya Tou also shared her regrets, writing that she'd tied the knot with her non-celeb boyfriend William Wang last year, and they had planned to visit her grandmother as a couple once the pandemic eased.
But then tragedy struck.
“A lifetime of regret, [and] something that I’ll never have the chance to do again…” wrote Ya Tou.
“I hope everyone will be able to understand just how lucky we in Taiwan have been for the past two years. We haven’t been toppled over by the pandemic, and our loved ones are very healthy. Now that the new variant Omicron has appeared, I hope that the world will be able to hold back this wave,” she added.
