Chinese actor Leo Wu, also known as Wu Lei, has recently been embroiled in online controversy all because of baseless claims made by a Weibo user.

On Nov 18, a user known as Bai Shanshan_a posted on the Chinese platform claiming: “Wu Lei bed photos, 10,000 yuan (S$1,800) each — who wants to buy?”

Shanshan then alleged that the 26-year-old has done "too many illegal things" and demanded: "I need to know what you were doing on the night of Nov 20."

The post immediately went viral and sparked intense online debate.

In response to the allegations, Wu Lei's studio swiftly released a statement: "Recently, some internet users have maliciously fabricated and spread false information about our company's artiste, Wu Lei, on Weibo."

"Our company hereby solemnly declares the statements about Wu Lei posted by them are baseless rumours!" they asserted.

They stated that they had entrusted their lawyers to "legally secure evidence regarding all false information concerning him on various platforms". They will "resolutely pursue the infringers' liability through all legal means."

The next day (Nov 19), the actor also personally responded on Weibo: "I don’t know her. Lawyers have been entrusted to pursue legal responsibility in accordance with the law."

Despite the denials, Shanshan did not back down.

“Only 20,000 yuan (S$4,000) [of your photos] has been sold so far. Wu Lei, what are you going to use to repay what you owe me?" she asked in a separate update.

After her main account was suspended, she then created additional accounts, including “Bai Shanshan83". Tagging Wu Lei, she asked: “Was it you who reported me?” These accounts were subsequently also banned.

But now, Shanshan has come out to admit that she'd fabricated all those allegations against the star.

Using a new account named “-833-”, Shanshan claimed the original post stemmed from joking with a friend who shared the same name.

"I'm sorry Mr Wu Lei, the saga has escalated so badly and caused so much trouble," she wrote.

She explained that, after her main account was banned, she maliciously tagged Wu Lei to “attract traffic” and gain attention.

"I will be cautious with my words for the rest of my life. This is my most sincere apology," said Shanshan.

In addition, she claimed that “one [of her] accounts was banned and another was hacked.”

Prior to her admission, Shanshan did not release any photos or tangible evidence and relied solely on suggestive language and insinuations against Wu Lei.

She repeatedly referenced November 20, questioned Wu Lei’s whereabouts that night, and used terms such as “betrayal,” “cheating,” and even implied “illegal behaviour.”

Wu Lei’s fans, however, soon compiled and released his official itinerary, showing that he was filming with a production crew on both Nov 20 and 21, directly contradicting the accusations.

Netizens are now questioning whether Shanshan's apology was a form of crisis management aimed at avoiding legal responsibility.

Still, Wu Lei’s studio confirmed that it had initiated criminal legal proceedings, emphasising that the two parties had no personal relationship or interaction.

The Beijing Xingquan Law Firm also released a statement confirming that case-filing materials had been formally submitted, seeking a public apology, compensation for damages, and other legal liabilities.

Legal experts noted that if Shanshan’s actions are legally verified as defamation, she could face up to three years in prison under Chinese law.

Wu Lei simply gave a very brief response before leaving the issue to his team.
What was she thinking?
What was Shanshan's point of doing all that to try to bring him down?
