94-Yr-Old HK Actor Wu Fung Was In A Coma For 4 Days, Just Weeks After Breaking Guinness World Record

Just weeks after setting a Guinness World Record as the oldest Chinese-language artiste to stage a concert, 94-year-old Hong Kong veteran Wu Fung suffered a life-threatening health scare that left him in the Intensive Care Unit, where he spent four days in a coma.

Wu Fung shared the details in a Xiaohongshu video on July 30 alongside his daughter-in-law, Jojo.

She revealed that while the family had previously told the public Wu Fung had contracted Covid-19 and the flu, they had deliberately kept his actual diagnosis private to avoid worrying fans and disrupting his treatment.

In reality, Wu Fung had developed acute cholangitis, a severe infection of the bile duct, after a gallstone became lodged in it.

The condition turned critical, and he was admitted to the ICU at Hong Kong's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Jojo said Wu Fung experienced breathing difficulties and had to be placed on a ventilator. He remained in a coma for four days.

"We were very worried and didn't want reporters going to the hospital and disturbing either the medical staff or dad while he was receiving treatment," she explained.

Wu Fung's attending doctor described the ordeal as a brush with death, explaining that acute cholangitis can lead to bacteria entering the bloodstream, causing sepsis, which can be a life-threatening condition if not treated promptly.

Doctors also removed Wu Fung's gallbladder to reduce the risk of the infection recurring.

Upon hearing what had happened to him, Wu Fung said: "That's terrifying!"

Recalling the moment he regained consciousness, Wu Fung said he woke up feeling disoriented.

"When I opened my eyes, everything felt unfamiliar. A healthcare worker asked me what my name was, and when I answered correctly, they were very happy," he said.

He added that his hands had been restrained to prevent him from accidentally pulling out the tubes attached to his face and chest or disturbing his wounds while he was still recovering.

Wu Fung also shared that throughout his time unconscious, he kept thinking about his family, friends, godchildren and fans.

"In my dreams, I kept telling myself that I had to see all my family and good friends again. Now that I can, I'll spend more time chatting with everyone and meeting them," he said.
