Director Wong Jing Suggests Boasting To Friends May Have Led to Edison Chen’s Photo Leak Scandal in 2008

It’s been 17 years since Edison Chen’s career-destroying sex-photo scandal, yet people are still talking about it today.

In a new video on his YouTube channel Wong Jing World, Hong Kong director Wong Jing weighed in on the 2008 incident, which saw Edison’s private photos leaked online and his reputation destroyed.

The scandal involved some 1,400 images and severely damaged the reputation of actresses like Cecilia Cheung and Gillian Chung, while driving Edison to withdraw indefinitely from the entertainment industry.

For years, the widely accepted explanation was that Edison’s computer — which he had sent in for repairs — was deliberately accessed by a technician who uncovered and uploaded the photos.

Wong Jing, however, has his doubts.

In his video, he noted that locating those images among the computer’s vast amount of data would have required painstaking effort.

“Without someone pointing it out, who would know what photos were hidden inside the computer?” he asked.

The director went on to boldly speculate that someone might have revealed exactly where the files were stored, enabling the technician to find them.

He also raised the possibility that Edison himself may have, perhaps while drinking or in a particularly exuberant mood, shown friends the photos while bragging about “how many female stars he had dated” or “how many photos he had taken”.

“As a director at the time, I found Edison to be a very well-behaved person,” Wong Jing said, describing him as polite, punctual, and professional, adding that he never imagined such a scandal could occur.

Initially, Wong Jing refused to believe the leak was real at all, assuming the images had been maliciously doctored — until he accidentally saw photos of Gillian, with whom he had worked multiple times.

Now, he speculates that Edison may have occasionally boasted to friends about how “amazing” his girlfriend was, or about having “many girlfriends”, implying that the leak may have originated from the actor “loving to show off”.

Over time, he suggests, this information could have spread “from one to ten, ten to a hundred”, eventually reaching the computer technician, who then dug through the machine during repairs and uploaded the files online.
