Woman Caught Stealing Qing Ming Offerings At Cemetery; Said To Be Repeat Offender
An incident in Hong Kong during Qing Ming Festival this year (Apr 5) has sparked intense public backlash, after a middle-aged woman was reportedly caught red-handed by a cleaner for taking fruits left behind as offerings at a cemetery.
The annual tomb-sweeping festival sees many Chinese people visit their ancestors’ graves, clean the tombs, and make offerings to pay their respects.
According to a viral post on Threads, the OP heard a commotion in the distance while visiting the cemetery. It was later revealed that a person in charge of the site, along with a female cleaner, had witnessed the woman's actions and were shouting to stop her from escaping.
It turned out that the woman had brought her own reusable bag and used it to keep the fruit offerings. According to the cleaner, she collected fruits left behind by others after their prayers and packed them into her bag.
The OP also recalled the exchange between the site manager and the woman. “What you’re doing is theft,” the manager said.
However, the woman defended herself, replying: “I didn’t know. I just thought it shouldn’t go to waste. It’s really not theft. It’s my first time here.”
The cleaner then disputed her claim: “I’ve been following you and I’ve taken photos as well. From how practiced your actions were, I’m certain this is not your first time [taking the fruits].”
Separately, another cleaner at the tomb site said they had noticed offerings frequently going missing. This has resulted in cleaners getting blamed for the losses and even having to compensate out of their own pockets.
Despite the confrontation, the woman was ultimately let off. After consulting their supervisor, the site manager decided to release her. During the discussion, there were also suggestions of involving the police, in hopes that it would deter her from repeating the act in future.
On the other hand, the OP praised the cleaner for being observant and quick-thinking, adding that she avoided alerting the woman early and instead followed her to take photos as evidence, leaving her with no way to deny her actions.
The post sparked heated discussion online, with netizens condemning the woman's actions as shameful and disrespectful.
Some questioned whether she might resell the stolen offerings after taking a large amount of fruit and other items, while others condemned her actions as shameful, adding that they would never dare touch offerings meant for ancestors.
