Woman, 26, Gets Bad Sore Throat After Having Mala Hot Pot, Dies The Next Day
What happened exactly?

A 26-year-old woman from China has reportedly died after consuming hot pot.
The woman, known only as Xiao Yuan, had met up with her friends after working overtime to have mala hot pot. She felt discomfort in her throat immediately after the meal, but simply blamed it on the spicy food she ate.
Xiao Yuan woke up the next morning with a severe sore throat. She also experienced difficulty breathing. According to one of her friends, Xiao Yuan thought she caught a cold, and took over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication.
However, as time passed, Xiao Yuan’s symptoms worsened. She started to feel as though she was suffocating, and also felt cold and dizzy.
Realising her condition was getting more serious by the minute, Xiao Yuan checked herself into a hospital that same day.
Sadly, she did not receive treatment in time.
According to reports, Xiao Yuan passed out when she arrived at the hospital. Medics rushed to resuscitate her, but her heart had already stopped beating.
Xiao Yuan was only at the hospital for 10 minutes before she was pronounced dead.
Doctors have attributed the cause of Xiao Yuan’s death to acute epiglottitis.
Epiglottitis refers to the inflammation of the epiglottis, which is the flap at the base of one’s tongue. Symptoms include fever, severe sore throat, increased breathing rate, and drooling. Without receiving prompt treatment, the condition can result in the complete obstruction of one’s airway, potentially proving fatal.
Speaking to the media, a doctor stated that epiglottitis can happen to both adults and kids, and recommends that patients seek medical help once they experience any symptoms.
