What Went Down At Zoe Tay's 50th Birthday Bash
Of course, the star-studded shindig was fit for a queen.
“Long live the Queen!” we are chanting along with Zoe Tay’s royal subjects aka her colleagues and the rest of her Mediacorp family. We have all gathered at Japanese gastropub Enbu at Suntec City to celebrate Zoe’s 50th birthday (she turns fabulous fifty on Jan 10). The big bash also commemorates Ah Jie’s 30th year in showbiz. The stars who show up to the intimate shindig come armed with blooms and balloons, champagne and designer eyewear. Oh, and more blooms. “There are enough flowers here tonight for you to set up your own floral shop,” jokes guest-turned-emcee Bryan Wong to Zoe. The most IG-worthy of them all? A massive bouquet made up of 150 (!) green, pink and red roses that was presented to Zoe by Mediacorp CEO Tham Loke Kheng. There’s a meaning behind those flowers: The three different colours signify each decade that Zoe has been in showbiz, and also, the past, present and future.
“This feels like when I had just given birth to my first son!” an exhilarated Ah Jie says at the sight of the many cameras flashing in her face — a reference to the media scrum at the press conference after her first pregnancy. “I’m really very happy ’cos I never thought of doing such a big celebration for my 50th. Today is a rare occasion that everyone can gather together, so I really treasure it a lot.”

Sneaking in from the back door at 10.15pm (the shindig started at 7.30pm) was Rebecca Lim, who had rushed over after filming. Well, better late than never. When it was time to take photos, we heard Zoe asking, “Where’s my princess?” Cue Becks scrambling to be by Ah Jie’s side. Aww… Zoe sweet.

Couple goals
Lovebirds Felicia and Jeffrey were all lovey-dovey that night. When, like a kaypoh relative at a CNY gathering, we asked them when they would be tying the knot, Jeffrey replied cryptically, “2018 is going to be a special year.” You read it here first.

“It’s very hard to buy a gift for someone who has everything,” says Terence Cao, who turned 50 last October. (P/S: We’ll have whatever he is having) Nonetheless, he bought Zoe a pair of Gentle Monster limited-edition sunglasses that he says “is made of rose gold, and hopefully, will brings more ‘gold’ to Ah Jie”. Huat ah!

During the cake-cutting, Bryan announces that Des has “a special request”, which is for Ah Jie to remove the candle from the cake... with her mouth. To which, Ah Jie immediately warned Des: “I want you to stay away from me.” Turns out the actor had planned to, you guessed it, smash Ah Jie’s face into the cake. Too bad his plan was foiled, as Ah Jie moved ever so swiftly to remove the candle (yes, with her mouth) that he had no time to react. Guess trying to prank Ah Jie is no, um, piece of cake.

Zoe and Aileen show their sisterly bond by puckering up for the camera. Fun fact: The two go a long way back — they are both alumni of the inaugural Star Search talent hunt in 1988.
