What Happened To The S$176K Late Taiwanese Actor Chen Song-Yong Left His Indonesian Helper?
Recent reports claimed Yule had spent the entire inheritance within a year and fallen into debt but is that the truth?
Remember Yule, the Indonesian domestic helper who inherited NT$4 million (S$176K at the time) from late Taiwanese actor Chen Song-Yong?
Song-Yong, who died in 2021 at the age of 80, never married and had no children.
Yule cared for him in his later years and the pair shared a close relationship, with Song-Yong treating her like a daughter.
Following a redistribution of his estate, Yule received NT$4mil (S$176K) in 2022 and returned to Indonesia.
Earlier this week, Taiwanese media reported that Yule had spent the entire sum within a year, fallen into debt and returned to Taiwan to work as a caregiver again.
The reports claimed Yule had admitted in a livestream that she didn't know how to manage such a large sum of money.
She was said to have bought two properties, including one she planned to rent out for passive income, but later ran into financial difficulties with her husband and had to sell the properties to repay their debts.
Turns out, that's not what happened.
Yule has since appeared in a video call with a Taiwan reporter to refute the reports.
Looking exasperated by how widely the claims had spread, Yule said in fluent Taiwanese Hokkien: “I’m doing fine in Indonesia. Nothing has happened to me.”
She also urged people not to believe the reports.
To prove her point, Yule gave viewers a look at the shop she currently runs in Indonesia, prompting the reporter she was speaking to to remark that it was far bigger than a small neighbourhood provision shop.
Yule also reportedly owns a property that she rents out and continues to sell homemade biscuits during festive periods.
When asked if she plans to return to Taiwan to work, Yule firmly said no, though she would like to visit for a holiday someday.
She also showed off a gold ring and chain that Song-Yong had given her.
In 2022, a friend of Song-Yong said Yule was financially comfortable and could enjoy retirement with her husband.
Instead of retiring, however, Yule was selling homemade biscuits and venturing into e-commerce.
Seems she's doing just fine, after all.
