Taiwanese actor Wang Ta Lu, 31, recently went public with his relationship with Malaysian star Joey Chua, 28.

Although the stars have been dating for quite some time now, they never officially announced their relationship until they took part in Chinese reality program My Happy Life (哎呀好身材).

In the show, Ta Lu addressed a super sweet letter to Joey, writing: “[It's] because I have you that I now have a new family member".

Ta Lu said he was a person who didn't get much love from his family, but has since learnt the importance of familial affection. According to the actor, Joey allowed him to realise “the good a family can bring”.

Joey, who is from Malaysia, is better known for her appearance in the second season of idol search Youth With You.

She joined Chinese agency Maninquin Entertainment in 2018, and though she is now an independent artiste, has been active in China's showbiz scene since.

It’s never easy leaving one’s hometown alone, and Joey admitted that she didn’t have many friends when she first arrived in China.

Enter Ta Lu, who “took very good care of her”, and “often brought her on outings”.

After getting to know each other and spending more time together, Ta Lu temporarily returned to Taiwan and the two were unable to meet for two months.

However, he would still text her daily to update her on his life back home.

Through those conversations, Joey started developing feelings for him.

The two were stuck in the getting-to-know-each-other-better phase for a while, until Ta Lu popped the question and asked Joey if she “wanted to be in a relationship” with him.

Joey initially thought the actor was joking. “I did have my reservations then. But I thought about it, and I was really moved by him. So [I decided] yes, let’s be together," she said.

The other guests on the program gushed over the story of how their relationship blossomed, likening it to “an idol drama”.
