Chinese businessman Wang Sicong is known for flaunting his lavish lifestyle and speaking his mind on social media. However, it seems like his outspoken ways have landed him in really hot soup this time.

The 34-year-old, who is the son of billionaire tycoon Wang Jianlin, founder of Dalian Wanda Group and one of China’s richest men, has reportedly been arrested by Shanghai police on suspicion of picking quarrels and provoking trouble.

While the news has yet to be confirmed, trouble reportedly started brewing two weeks ago when Sicong took to Weibo to question the efficacy of Lianhua Qingwen, a traditional Chinese medicine which is endorsed by the Chinese government and claims to treat symptoms of COVID-19.

Sicong reposted a video on the TCM pills and questioned whether the World Health Organization had recommended the use of the capsule as COVID-19 treatment.

He also called on the China Securities Regulatory Commission to investigate Chinese firm Yiling Pharmaceutical which manufactures the drug.

As a result, shares of Yiling Pharmaceutical’s plunged more than 10 per cent, losing almost 7bil yuan (S$1.48bil) in market value.

A few days later, he criticised China's zero-COVID policy, which has resulted in a strict lockdown in Shanghai for close to a month and with no end in sight.

"The PCR test every morning is not about [whether it is] positive or negative, but your slavery and passion. From now on, I will not go for any more tests,” he wrote.

Rumours started swirling online that he was arrested on Apr 27

After the post was published, his Weibo account, which has more than 40 million followers, was banned and presumably deleted.

All the posts on his account have been removed and there's a message that reads “the account is unavailable due to complaints of violations of laws and regulations and the relevant provisions of the Weibo Community Convention".

Rumours of Sicong's arrest and ban quickly sparked discussions online, with many netizens wondering if he has also been blacklisted on WeChat Moments.

His Instagram account, which was last updated on Feb 15, is still active and many netizens have left him messages urging him to report his safety.
