TVB Pulls Variety Show Memories Beyond Horizon Off Air, Netizens Blame Sloppy Editing And Draggy Pace

One would think Chinese variety show Memories Beyond Horizon would be a big hit with audiences given the number of A-listers — Jackie Chan, Charmaine Sheh, Maggie Cheung Ho-Yee, Sheren Tang and Francis Ng — in its cast.
Sadly, that's not the case.
Not only did it receive middling reviews, the show, which aired at 11.35pm every Saturday on TVB's Jade Channel, was recently replaced by the 2023 Super Trio Chinese New Year Special and Hong Kong micro film A Time of Love.
Memories Beyond Horizon, which recasts new actors in several classic TVB dramas such as The Bund, War And Beauty and Triumph in the Skies, came with a lot of hype.
However, it was criticised for being too "script-driven" and relying too much on nostalgia. Viewers also felt that there wasn't enough acting in the show, which defeats the purpose of the programme.
On top of that, the show was also perceived as "too draggy" with many elements that were "not related to the theme".
For instance, a regular segment was supposed take up only 30 minutes (10-20mins for the performance and another 10mins for the judging), which meant that the show, which has seven segments, should only last three and a half hours.
That meant that the show could have ended after just two episodes.
But instead, the show was extended to four episodes after the cast of the aforementioned TVB shows were brought on to reminisce about their time filming the dramas.
The show was also said to be very sloppy in terms of post-production work.
Netizens were unhappy that every episode was filled with advertisements which disrupted the flow, as well as inconsistent and messy editing.
For instance, when showing snippets of New Police Story, The Legend of the Condor Heroes and The Bund, netizens noticed that the scenes were obviously not filmed at the same time as the judges were shown wearing different outfits.
