Top Chinese Official Accused of Silencing All Talk on Yu Menglong’s Death In China
Weibo reportedly scrubbed more than 100,000 posts discussing the 36-year-old’s shocking death, while thousands of other accounts have been banned or silenced.
It has been over two weeks since Chinese actor Yu Menglong’s tragic death on September 11 in Beijing.
But the circumstances around his fatal fall from an apartment are spiralling into something stranger than any C-drama plotline.
What authorities initially labelled as an “alcohol-related incident” is now being questioned on all fronts.
Even Menglong’s mum has (allegedly) publicly declared that her son was the victim of a wrongful death, accusing his so-called “murderer” of lying to the public by insisting it was an accident.
Adding fuel to the fire, the Beijing police reportedly closed the case in just 12 hours, while media outlet Neican claims that Chinese Communist Party (CCP) standing committee member Cai Qi issued a verbal order demanding that Menglong’s death be fully censored across all levels of government.
A so-called “Three Nos” principle was allegedly circulated: No participation, No discussion, and No browsing “for fun”. Rumours even suggest that violators could face strict punishment.
In fact, it was reported that three netizens were tracked down and charged with spreading rumours about Menglong’s death.
Meanwhile, Weibo has gone into full clean-up mode, reportedly deleting over 100,000 posts related to Menglong’s passing, banning thousands of accounts, and suspending comment functions for more than 15,000 accounts.
However, the sweeping censorship has only fuelled suspicion of a guilty conscience at the top.
“If it were truly just an accident, why the heavy-handed censorship?” asked a netizen.
The plot also thickens further with Chinese actor Cai Yijia’s name being dragged into the scandal. Cai Yijia is one of the 17 individuals allegedly involved with Menglong's death.
Online speculation has linked him to Cai Qi, with rumours suggesting anything from being a distant relative to an illegitimate son. Some netizens even pointed to alleged facial similarities and his seemingly smooth career trajectory.
