You know what they say about Asian parents not being good at expressing their affection?
We witnessed that when Shaun Tam won Best Actor for his role in Take Two at the TVB Anniversary Awards last Sunday (Jan 2). The 41-year-old, who is the son of iconic Hongkong actor Ti Lung, 75, also took home the Malaysia’s Favourite TVB Actor award.

Congrats, Shaun!
When Shaun was doing his post-win interview, Ti Lung suddenly interrupted and “lectured” his son on camera for five minutes, telling him to be humble and that he was just “lucky” to have won the award.
"I know it’s because I’m also in this industry, so my son wants to prove that he could make it too,” said Ti Lung.
“Your abilities come with responsibilities. You have to use your actions and work to repay those who supported you. You are very lucky [to have won] today, but the skills of those who competed against you may not necessarily lose to you, they just lost out when it came to luck."
He continued: "If you have your original aspirations, you have to work hard for your family, kids, wife and mummy.”

Shaun understands his dad’s love language
Despite Shaun and the host’s attempts to cut Ti Lung off, the veteran actor went on (and on): “I am very grateful that because you don't want me to be disappointed, you put in a lot of hard work to pursue success, but you need to know, you put in a lot of effort, and so did I. I don't wish to see you sad and disappointed when you fail.”
This was when Shaun decided to interject, saying: “Dad, this is why I didn't dare ask you to come [tonight]."
Ti Lung then said: "Why do I keep advising you? [Because] I'm afraid that you would overdo it, but your mummy supports you wholeheartedly, and I will support you wholeheartedly, okay? You have to be humble in the future. The fried rice you cook is very yummy. Really."
Shaun then smiled at his dad, and said: "Today, I am happiest because you are here", leaving Ti Lung speechless for a moment.
He then changed the topic and reminded Shaun to be careful when driving home.

Wants Shaun to consider working behind the scenes
When asked if he is proud of Shaun’s achievement, Ti Lung replied that he would be happier if his son can spread more joy to audiences in future.
"I think if he has the ability, he can look at working behind the scenes, for example, be a producer and director. In this position, you can help the younger generation, and have a positive impact on society,” he said.
“Eric [Tsang, who is now TVB's general manager] is so successful because he has the ability to influence people’s hearts. His achievements and ability make people happy. If you can spread more joy in the future, I will be even happier."
