An elderly woman from Taiwan’s Ruifang District was recently discovered to have kept her late daughter’s corpse in her home for six years.

Her daughter, Li, was 53.

In order to preserve Li’s body, the woman left the aircon in a room turned on every day for the past six years.

According to reports, prior to her passing, Li told her mum she did not want a burial.

Li’s body was eventually discovered when her mum contacted social workers for help.

The woman suffered a stroke earlier this year, and no longer had the ability to clean Li’s body daily. She was also facing financial difficulties, and was unable to pay her electricity bills.

When the police arrived at the woman’s house, they saw that Li’s body had dried up. The corpse was also covered in a layer of oil, which helped to preserve it.

The house has since been sealed off.

The woman was said to have moved into the third-floor apartment seven to eight years ago. She was often seen leaving her house alone to go shopping, but seldom engaged in conversation with her neighbours.

It's why her neighbours all assumed she lived alone and no one was aware of Li’s existence.

When interviewed by Taiwanese media, the county mayor said he once planned to visit Li’s home. However, upon reaching the apartment, he discovered they did not have a doorbell.

He tried reaching out to Li’s mother again last year after realising she did not claim her elderly care package, but she remained uncontactable.

He also recalled only seeing Li’s mother “two or three times” in the past.

A detailed autopsy of Li’s corpse has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of her death, though the police have ruled out homicide.

The neighbours of the elderly woman were all shocked to find out what happened, with some saying they never once smelled any odour coming from the house.

According to the county mayor, the elderly lady rarely interacted with others as well.
