HK Movie Table For Six A Big Hit With Audiences In China, They Call It A “True-Blue Cantonese Comedy”
The movie revolves around three brothers, played by Dayo Wong, Louis Cheung, and Peter Chan, and their attempt to put together a reunion dinner.
Now this is a box office hit no one saw coming.
Hong Kong comedy Table For Six, directed by Sunny Chan (not to be confused for the Hong Kong actor with the same name), and starring Dayo Wong, Stephy Tang, Louis Cheung , Peter Chan, and Ivana Wong, has been slowly climbing up the ranks at the box office in Hong Kong since its release in September 7, and is now poised to becoming the highest-grossing Hong Kong movie of the year.
The Cantonese movie, which was originally slated to be released in February this year as a Chinese New Year movie, saw its release date delayed to September due to Covid.
Table For Six revolves around three brothers, played by Dayo, Louis, and Peter, and their attempt to put together a reunion dinner.
Though its release in China was not heavily promoted, with the movie being shown in theatres with its original Cantonese audio, Chinese audiences are very much taken with the movie.
In just one month, it has earned an estimated 100 mil yuan (S$19.8mil) in China alone.
Over in Hong Kong, the movie is now the second-highest grossing Hong Kong-produced movie of the year, eclipsing the much-talked about Anita Mui biopic Anita.
It has also become the highest-grossing comedy movie in Hong Kong in the last 17 years.
Its total box office takings are estimated to be around US$19.75mil (S$28.1mil).
Netizens have largely given it favourable reviews, with one writing that the movie is a “true-blue Cantonese comedy movie”.
“Thankfully, Hong Kong films are still shown in movie theatres in the Mainland, to let us know that you don’t need to rely on jokes for comedic effect, and that you don’t need to sensationalise emotional scenes,” one wrote.
Table For Six is currently playing in cinemas in Singapore now.
