“He’s Too Old”: Song Joong Ki, 40, Criticised For Rom-Com Comeback

Korean star Song Joong Ki’s latest K-drama has the internet talking, and not in the way you’d expect.

The 40-year-old is making his long-awaited return to KBS, 10 years after he catapulted to superstardom with Descendants of the Sun. He’s set to headline upcoming rom-com Love Cloud alongside Park Ji Hyun, 31

Set to air in the first half of 2027, the drama follows two ex-lovers who reunite in Jeju after seven years — now an air traffic controller and a pilot.

Sounds dreamy? Not everyone thinks so.

Online reactions came in fast and fierce, with some netizens saying he “doesn’t seem suited” for rom-coms anymore because of his age.

There were comments like “He’s too old. No one wants to watch someone this old act in an idol drama,” “Can he leave this lane already?” and “Another cliché reunion-and-reconciliation plot, so tired of it.”

Ouch.

Still, fans aren’t writing him off just yet. After all, Joong Ki once pulled in a massive 38 per cent viewership rating with Descendants of the Sun.

And with rising actress Park Ji Hyun — who reportedly chose this project after reviewing multiple scripts — plus a Jeju Island backdrop and a second-chance romance, there’s still potential for sparks to fly.

Also adding fuel to the buzz: the pair previously shared screen time in 2022’s Reborn Rich, where their “uncle-sister-in-law” dynamic got people talking. Now, they’re reuniting as romantic leads… and curiosity is definitely part of the appeal.

Love Cloud is officially in production and actors Lee Si Woo and Choi Hee Jin are also in talks to join the cast.
