“Who Doesn’t Know Hongkong Belongs To China?” Sammo Hung's Son Timmy Hung To Chinese Netizens Who Slammed Him For Saying He’s From Hongkong
And that's how you get your point across to unreasonable netizens.
In one of his recent videos, Hongkong actor Timmy Hung, whose father is martial arts legend Sammo Hung, jumped onto the “I’m from Yunlin” Douyin trend, where he created his own rendition of the song by changing the lyrics to "I'm from Hongkong."
The video quickly received backlash from Chinese netizens, who criticised the 47-year-old for not saying he's from "Hongkong China," simply because, well, "Hong Kong must belong to China."
Last week, the actor posted another video to clarify things, and surprise, surprise, his whip-smart explanation managed to appease those angry netizens.
“It has been so many years since the Hongkong handover, is there still anyone who doesn't know that Hongkong belongs to China?", Timmy asked in his video.
The actor said he would only add the word "China" if he's introducing himself to someone who isn't familiar with the country, just like how one wouldn't have to emphasise Beijing China or Shanghai China when introducing themselves to a fellow Chinese.
"It's different if I'm speaking to a foreigner. If a foreigner asks me where I'm from, I'd say China. If they ask 'Which part of China?', I'd reply 'Hongkong China'.
"But as a Chinese, shouldn't you already know that Hongkong's part of China?", he said.
Timmy also explained that in the past, he used to introduce himself as a "Hongkong China actor" until some Mainlanders told him that it was unnecessary.
So what would he say to those who insist he be more geographically accurate?
"If that's the case, next time should I say I'm from Earth's Hongkong China instead? Otherwise you might mistake me for an alien!", he said.
