'90s HK Actor Roy Cheung Turned Vegetarian For 3 Months 'Cos He Stomped On A Guan Gong Statue For A Scene

Roy played the iconic Crow in Young and Dangerous 3.

There was a particular scene in which he gets attacked by his lackey.

Crow then pushes the lackey, who crashes into an altar, knocking over a statue of Guan Gong, causing it to shatter all over the floor.

Not only did Crow not apologise for what he did, he declared that praying to the deity was useless since his own lackey was trying to murder him anyway. He then stomped on the broken statue.

For those not in the know, Guan Gong or Lord Guan is the deity embodiment of Guan Yu, a military general from the Han dynasty.

Due to his loyalty and victories in battle, many Chinese, especially businesspeople, worship him to this day.

While Crow was fearless about angering the deity, Roy, on the other hand, felt absolutely worried about what he did.

The actor reportedly felt so “deeply disturbed” after filming the scene, he started to get nightmares.

It was said that he initially refused to do that scene, and even threatened to pull out of the movie. Filming only resumed after he accepted a red packet containing HK$66,600 (S$11.6K) from the producers.

Roy, in a bid to sooth his conscience, visited a temple to pray and atone for his 'sin'. He then spent HK$10K (S$1.7K) to remake the statue and even turned vegetarian for three months.
