Taiwanese crooner Phil Chang, 55, suffered a scare earlier this week after his wife, lyricist Tracy Hsiao, who is better known as Shi Yi-lang, experienced difficulties breathing due to an allergic reaction.

According to Phil, Shi Yi-lang is allergic to certain ingredients in painkillers and suffered a reaction after taking medication prescribed by a well-known hospital. He quickly rushed her to Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital for emergency treatment.

Sharing the ordeal on Facebook on Wednesday (May 25), he wrote: "Seeing her breathing getting increasingly difficult, I kept overtaking all the vehicles on the mountain. It was quite frightening."

Fortunately, Shi Yi-lang is no longer in serious condition. Apart from some swelling in her eyes, she is fine, he said.

Shi Yi-lang has always been careful when it comes to medication

Phil said that Shi Yi-lang has always been very careful when it comes to medication.

She would indicate her allergies when filling out her medical history at the hospital, and would usually remind doctors about it when they prescribed medication.

However, they did not bring it up this time as the doctor said he would only prescribe her a muscle relaxant and did not mention anything about painkillers.

While there was some negligence on the doctor’s part, Phil admitted that he too was at fault for not carefully checking the medication.

Acknowledging that it was an accident, he thanked the medical staff for their hard work and also shared a PSA on drug allergies.

"This incident is a reminder to hospitals, doctors and patients to be extra careful when it comes to drug allergies… and if drug allergies could be indicated on the health insurance card, it would be better,” he said.

Phil and Shi Yi-lang met when they were just 12 and began dating when they were 17.

They tied the knot in 1997 after dating for 13 years and have two sons, 23-year-old Randall, who in recent years gained attention for his good looks, and Moomoo, 18.

Not only are Phil and Shi Yi-lang partners in life, but also at work. They have collaborated on more than 150 songs and Shi Yi-lang is responsible for some of Phil's biggest hits like ‘Well-intentioned’, 'Troubled By The Moon', and ‘It's Hard To Say’.
