M'sian Singer Peggy Lai Refutes Online Claims That She “Abandoned Her Husband And Son” After Becoming A Nun
The newly-ordained nun says their relationship as a family would not change, even though she has to divorce her husband.
Malaysian singer Peggy Lai (also known as Lai Bing Xia), 55, announced through a Facebook Live session on Jan 2 that she's been officially ordained as a Buddhist nun.
The singer, who has been vegetarian for eight years, shared in her caption that it was a “life-changing day" for her.
Peggy has since stepped out to address the comments personally.
In an interview with Malaysian media, she revealed that she was actually briefly ordained as a nun around seven years ago.
However, her son was still young at that time, so she decided to return to the secular world. Today, her son is now married, and has a son of his own. Therefore, she decided to get ordained as a nun again.

She went on to reveal that her husband has thought of becoming ordained as a monk even before her. The couple has already decided to submit the paperwork for their divorce in the next two weeks, since Peggy has to renounce all worldly relationships as a Buddhist nun. She emphasised that their relationship as a family will not change regardless of their divorce
“We're all very clear of what path we want to take for the next half of our lives, and what lives we want to lead,” she said.
In another interview, Peggy mused that her life before becoming a nun had been exciting and that she wants to use the remainder of her life to influence others to become closer acquainted with Buddhism.
