Namewee Released on Bail After No Evidence Found Linking Him to Influencer’s Death; Her Friend Says “Shouldn't It Be Manslaughter”
The turn of events have surprised those close to Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh, who was found dead on October 22 in a KL hotel.
Malaysian authorities have found no evidence linking Malaysian singer-rapper Namewee to the sudden death of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh. The 42-year-old will be released today (Nov 13) on police bail.
However, influencer Vivian Hsieh, a close friend of Iris, took to social media to express her dissatisfaction with the outcome.
In an Instagram Story, she wrote on a black background: “There’s no murder, but shouldn’t it at least be considered manslaughter?”
Vivian said she was shocked by the decision but respects the Malaysian police and judiciary’s process. Still, she believes Namewee was present at the scene when the incident occurred and hopes he will “provide an honest explanation” about what happened.
Chen Jun Da, the lawyer representing Iris’s family, also stated that while Namewee will be released in accordance with the law, “It does not mean the case has come to an end.”
Iris, 31, was found dead in a bathtub at a five-star hotel in Kuala Lumpur on October 22.
Before her death, she was reportedly involved in sexual activity with Namewee, and drugs were allegedly found at the scene. The two were said to have been working on a video project together.
The case, initially classified as a sudden death, was reclassified by Malaysian police as a murder investigation on November 4. Namewee turned himself in the next day but denied all allegations.
Last night, Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar told Malaysian media that there is currently no evidence linking Namewee to Iris’s death, and the rapper will be released on police bail.
