Hong Kong actress Myolie Wu, 42, recently appeared on an episode of fellow celeb and good friend Sharon Chan’s YouTube talk show, Chi Chat, where Myolie shared more about her early days in showbiz.

In 2006, Myolie starred in TVB drama To Grow With Lov, where she played an plus-sized fashion designer. For that role, Myolie gained about 20kg.

She revealed that in the months leading up to the start of filming, she was constantly worried about being unable to put on enough weight. As a result, she spent most of her days just eating and sleeping, in an attempt to quickly pile on the pounds.

For a period of time, she also resorted to drinking special weight-gain shakes she got from a hospital.

“It was disgusting, and so sweet. Whenever I took a sip, I had to immediately struggle to get it down,” Myolie recalled.

More than a sacrifice.

Sharon then noted that Myolie had indeed sacrificed a lot for her To Grow With Love role, and that it was a pity that Myolie did not won Best Actress for it.

Myolie was nominated for both the Best Actress and Most Popular Female Character awards at the 2006 TVB Anniversary Awards for the role, but she did not win either.

About this, Myolie said: “To be honest, when I was 26, my acting was not as good as it is now, and I can’t just say that 'cos I sacrificed a lot, I should win an award [for it].”

Myolie also spoke about her lead role in the 2003 TVB drama Triumph in the Skies, admitting that her acting skills were really bad then.

“I feel that I didn’t do well, a lot of the scenes had [Hong Kong actor] Francis Ng taking charge, to teach us what to do,” she said.

She also joked that Francis, a revered actor, was scared of working with newbies like her.

“I think, instead of us being afraid of meeting him, he was more afraid of us. It's 'cos of all us were very new, and didn’t know how to act at all,” she said.

Oops.

Myolie went on to recall a conversation she had with Francis: “[He asked me] why I looked so happy to see him, [and] if I knew what I had to say in the next scene,” she said.

At that time, Myolie was taken aback by what Francis said ‘cos the script only called for her to smile happily while looking at him.

However, Myolie did not think about what her character was supposed to be feeling, and was merely following what the script said without a second thought. “I was not immersed in my character at all,” she said.
