Mum Of Chinese Influencer, Who Was Electrocuted To Death While Fishing, Suing Power Company For S$235K
The 22-year-old influencer's fishing rod had accidentally made contact with the live electricity cables that were suspended about 5 to 6 metres above the pond.
Back in 2020, Chinese influencer Duan Hongnan was electrocuted to death while fishing at a private pond. Two years later, his mother has filed a lawsuit against the local power company, seeking damages of up to 1.21mil yuan (S$235,000).
According to reports, Hongnan, who had 6 million followers on social media, had gone fishing with his then-girlfriend, Liu Qiannan, at the pond on that fateful day. Qiannan later spoke to the media revealing that Hongnan had died while trying to save her.
After filing the lawsuit, Hongnan’s mum spoke to the media again, sharing more details on how his death occured. As it turned out, Hongnan’s fishing rod, which measured 5.7m, had accidentally made contact with the live electricity cables that were suspended about 5 to 6 metres above the pond.
Hongnan’s official cause of death was also listed as electrocution.
After his passing, Hongnan’s mum sought legal advice, and realised that the fishing pond was not allowed to have such high-voltage power lines.
“Regardless of whether the children forked out money to fish at the pond or not, the pond should be responsible for the safety of everyone present,” Hongnan’s mum said.
Unfortunately, after the accident the fishing pond’s owner refused to hand over the CCTV footage, and swiftly carried out renovation works on the premises.
Hongnan’s mum shared that she was unable to ascertain whether the power lines were built first, or if the fishing pond was built first. Nevertheless, she believes that the power company should be responsible for the management of their power lines, as well as adhere to local regulations to eliminate possible risks near their lines.
As a result, Hongnan’s mum filed her lawsuit against the power company, seeking 712,920 yuan (S$140,000) in compensation, 38,309 yuan (S$7455) for funeral expenses, 10,000 yuan (S$2,000) for transportation, accommodation, and compensation for time off for the deceased’s relatives who helped with the funeral, as well as 200,000 yuan (S$38,900) for the mental distress caused.
The total compensation sought by Hongnan’s mum will amount to about 1.21mil yuan (S$235,000).
Reports state that the Chaoyang District Court in Changchun City has accepted the lawsuit, but proceedings have been put on hold for the time being, as the owner of the fishing pond has finally agreed to provide CCTV footage from the day of the accident.
