Muji’s New Clothing Line Resembles Robes Worn By Monks & Nuns

Could ‘monk fashion’ be the hottest trend this season?

Muji’s New Clothing Line Resembles Robes Worn By Monks & Nuns

Japanese retail company Muji is known for selling a wide range of products, from furniture to household items, and to clothes, in their highly recognisable minimalist aesthetic.

The brand has 14 outlets in Singapore.

However, a new clothing line from Muji has raised eyebrows.

A Xiaohongshu user from China recently posted a series of photos about how the brand’s latest offerings reminds them of robes worn by monks and nuns.

“This season’s fashion trend focuses on those who long for a desire-free monk lifestyle,” read their cheeky review.

The netizen shared pictures of her companion trying on a yellow linen tunic top, which really resembled the long cloth robes donned by Buddhist monks.

She also tried on a grey dress and paired it with a matching grey beanie, and included screenshots of Buddhist nuns from TV shows. You know, just in case you missed the similarities.

To complete the whole outfit, Muji also sells cloth flats, which come in both white and black, just like the kind you see in movies about Shaolin monks.

Should you wish to replicate the ‘monk’ look, some items are available on Muji's Singapore site, like the men’s flannel shirt jacket, which come in black, beige, and a bluish-grey for S$39.90.

While some netizens have said that the outfits would have make “the perfect Halloween costume”, the range also has a good number of fans who believe the clothes just need to be styled right to look good.

Perhaps you would feel extra blessed wearing it.

And the category is... monk realness
Similarities? Uncanny
Wonder if monks were really the inspiration behind this clothing line?
With a little imagination, you could dress like a nun too
