Ex-Miss HK Contestant Says Eric Tsang Told Her She Was "So Fat" & Needed To Lose Weight During The Audition

Beauty pageants often expect contestants to follow certain, let's be honest unattainable beauty standards. TVB's Miss Hong Kong is, of course, no exception.
In fact, one Miss Hong Kong 2022 delegate, Wendy Lam, who quit the competition after making it into the top 20, was fat shamed by TVB general manager Eric Tsang.
Recently, Wendy, 21, shared on social media her experience participating in the pageant.
According to Wendy, her mum was actually the one who wanted to be Miss Hong Kong, but she gave up on her dreams after getting married and having kids. She passed that goal on to her daughter, and secretly signed Wendy up for the pageant.
Recalling what happened when she met Eric and other TVB high-ranking execs at the audition, Wendy, who was then 19 and the youngest candidate, wrote: "Back then Mr Tsang asked me: "You're so fat, have you thought about losing weight?"
Appalled at Eric's tasteless question, Wendy retorted: "I'm sorry, I don't think any body type is inferior. I think being skinny or fat can be beautiful in their own ways. Beauty should come from within, from one's confidence and one's ability to love themselves."
As impressive as her reply was, it fell on deaf ears, according to Wendy.
"[You're] too young, too naive," laughed the panel. They then went on to ask Wendy to lose 10kg in three months.
When Wendy complained to her mum about what happened, her mum said: "If Mr Tsang asked you to lose weight, that means your looks are okay, and you still have potential!"
Wait... what?
Wendy went on to say she joined the pageant anyway because she didn't want to let her mum down.
"In my mind I thought, "Asian beauty standards are so weird," lamented Wendy.
She eventually decided to quit the pageant because she wanted to prioritise her studies at that time.
