Michelle Chen sheds “chubby” image after four years
She was previously ridiculed by netizens for being unsuitable to play the leading lady in Return of The Condor Heroes
Back in 2013, Michelle Chen bore the brunt of netizens’ attacks when she was revealed to be the leading lady, Xiao Long Nu, in the remake of Return of The Condor Heroes alongside Chen Xiao.
Apart from blasting her for the lack of the ‘aura’ that they felt that the leading lady required for her role, they also claimed that she was “too chubby” to play the heroine in the much-loved drama, with some likening her to a pig in period clothing. A nickname that they gave her back then was Xiao Long Bao, in which the second character ‘Long’ had the same pronunciation as her character, Xiao Long Nu’s name.
Fast forward four years later to the present, and the 34-year-old has successfully shed the image with her appearance on variety programme Up Idol 3, where she donned period garb once again and stunned audiences with her successful weight loss despite having given birth in December.
After the episode, netizens praised her for her unchanging beauty and shared that she looked so convincing that it was almost as if she stepped out of the past and time-traveled to present day.
Apart from shedding her “chubby” image from the past, Michelle also displayed her rarely-seen variety sense and quick wit on the show. With the actress appearing on few variety programmes, audiences commented that they hope to see her take on such similar appearances in future as she has the potential to be the next variety star.
