Matilda Tao Wants A “Funeral Party” Before She Dies — “Will There Be Merch?” Her Daughter Asks

Taiwanese host Matilda Tao, 55, who was deeply moved by these events, shared that she decided to discuss her thoughts on “end-of-life” plans with her daughter, Lillian Lee, 18. 

She posted their exchange on Threads last week.

Matilda said that if she ever felt her time was near, she would prefer to host a "funeral party", where friends and family could celebrate and say their goodbyes, rather than a traditional somber memorial.

The idea of "living funerals" has been gaining traction in recent years, allowing people to create lasting memories with loved ones before passing.

But what started out as an emotional conversation took on a humorous turn when Lilian responded excitedly: "So, will you release merch? I want to buy it! It’s going to be so cool!” 

Matilda was stunned by the unexpected reply and could only roll her eyes.

Um, is that a yes? 

Netizens praised Lilian's entrepreneurial mindset, calling her "marketing genius".

“I hope they release a commemorative T-shirt. I'd definitely buy one," wrote one user, while another said: “This might be the most avant-garde funeral merch ever.”

A third asked: “Is it the trend to pre-order funeral merch now?”

Some even saw it as a modern twist on condolence money, with one user pointing out: “At least guests get to bring something of value home.”
