“Don’t Talk Nonsense”: Maria Cordero Criticised For Recommending Urine To Treat Baby Eczema

We’ve heard of many wacky home health remedies, but this one takes the cake.

Veteran Hong Kong star Maria Cordero, 69, recently took to Douyin to share a tried-and-tested home remedy for treating baby eczema.

Maria, affectionately known as Fei Ma, has six children and 19 grandchildren, and in her video, she pointed out that the two generations have very different ways of caring for kids.

When babies suffer from eczema, which commonly occurs on the cheeks, the younger generation of mothers will take them to see a doctor, while the older generation would turn to this natural remedy: baby’s urine.

Say what?

She claims home remedy can treat eczema in less than 5 days

Fei Ma claimed that urine is sterile and can act as a disinfectant and has bleaching properties, so applying it to the affected area can soothe the skin in five days.

"We take fresh baby’s urine that is still warm and apply it around the baby's mouth. After five minutes, rinse it off thoroughly with water. Within five days, the eczema will be gone," she said.

Her daughter-in-law also uses this home remedy for her children's eczema.

"My daughter-in-law has four children. After it worked on the first child, she used the same treatment for the next three. Before you try it, let her know why you are doing this and prove that the method works,” advised Fei Ma.

This was our reaction when we heard about the remedy

Netizens had mixed reactions to Fei Ma's unconventional treatment.

While some vouched for its efficacy, others were naturally put off by it.

Not only is there no scientific evidence that urine can treat eczema, applying bodily waste on your body is just, well, gross and many netizens urged Fei Ma against promoting home treatments.

There were comments like "Don't talk nonsense" or "There are creams that you can apply now".

This incident also reminded netizens of the time when Fei Ma introduced viewers to freshwater fish sashimi in Foshan on the 2018 travel programme show Big Big Bay.

The Center for Food Safety later reported that freshwater fish has been banned in Hong Kong due to food safety issues and warned that consumption could lead to nine major health problems, including parasite infection, which could result in limb amputation, or even death.
