HK Director Stanley Kwan Is Sure Maggie Cheung Doesn’t Care About Those Age Shaming Comments, Says She’s Knows She’s 56

It was recently reported that classic Hong Kong movie Center Stage (阮玲玉), which starred screen goddess Maggie Cheung, now 58, is set to release its 4K director’s cut.

For her performance in the film, Maggie won Best Actress at the 28th Golden Horse Awards and the 1993 Hong Kong Film Awards.

In a recent interview, the director of Center Stage, Stanley Kwan, said he has not seen Maggie in the past 10 years, adding that she hardly keeps in contact with anyone from the film industry.

“She has her own way of life, she has decided to not appear in movies and instead focuses on music and film editing,” he said.

Maggie's last movie was French experimental movie Playtime in 2013. Soon after, Maggie reportedly said she would “never make another movie in her lifetime”.

Stanley last saw Maggie at the 2013 Golden Horse Film Festival, which had a special screening of Center Stage.

"I met Maggie then and spoke to her in person. Although she did not mention anything about not acting anymore, she did say she hadn’t made any movies in a long time,” said Stanley.

Stanley described Maggie as being very independent, and that she might not have intentionally cut off contact with her old friends. Instead, he think she's simply “moving on from one environment to another”.

As for the age-shaming and body-shaming comments that Maggie has gotten from netizens, Stanley is certain the Maggie he knows wouldn’t have given two hoots about them.

“Maggie would not care. To her, she’s already 56, and that’s just how she looks,'' he said.
