It's World Cup season now and football madness has taken over every football fan.

Taiwanese actor-singer-turned-fitness influencer Liu Genghong is one of them.

On Tues (Nov 22), the 50-year-old, who's a massive Lionel Messi fan, shared a pic of the football star on his Weibo, writing: "I'm ready, Argentina! But I still have to do my fitness live stream at 7.30pm later."

During the stream, Genghong and his wife Vivi Wang were, as usual, working out when it was announced that Argentina had lost its match against Saudi Arabia.

The shock defeat ended Argentina's unbeaten 36-match run. This World Cup is also Argentinian team captain Messi's fifth — and likely last — attempt to win the trophy, which is the only prize missing in the footballer's illustrious career.

Upon hearing the news, Genghong suddenly walked out of frame and started blowing his nose, which led netizens to think he was crying 'cos of the loss.

Vivi then unsympathetically turned to her hubby and said: "I just don't get what's there to be so upset about. Isn't there another chance for them to play again?"

Walking back into frame, Genghong replied: "Every game in the World Cup is very crucial."

Since the stream, the phrase "Liu Genghong cried after Lionel Messi lost" became a trending topic on Weibo.

One netizen said that the actor was being "too fake" while another asked: "How much did he bet on Argentina? Why is he crying until like that?"

However, Genghong had since clarified that he didn't actually break down because of the match.

"I was indeed sad that Argentina lost... And it just happened that I was working out and sweating, and my nose was runny..." he explained.

Sure or not?
