Liang Po Po Vs Ah Beng Actor Hits Back At Claims No One Was Watching The Film In Cinemas
Malaysian actor Jack Lim calls out a netizen for singling out his movie, saying, “It’s not just mine… all the screenings had no audience.”
Chinese New Year film Liang Po Po Vs Ah Beng, starring Jack Lim and Jack Neo, is currently the top-grossing CNY release in Malaysia, raking in over RM8.13 million (S$2.64mil) as of the sixth day of CNY (Feb 22).
But despite its box office lead, a Malaysian netizen recently cast doubt on the film’s performance, claiming its theatre screenings were “empty”.
The netizen shared screenshots on Facebook of seat maps from MyTown Shopping Centre in Kuala Lumpur for Feb 24 (eighth day of CNY), showing multiple screenings of Liang Po Po Vs Ah Beng with many unsold seats.
The user even threw shade, writing: “Every screening is completely empty — no one’s buying tickets. I’m scared of ghosts, it’s scary to watch alone. Better not watch,” along with the hashtag “dominating — ghosts watching?”
Well, Jack Lim wasn’t about to let the allegation slide.
In his Instagram video, Jack logged into a cinema ticketing platform to check ticket sales for other major Chinese New Year releases, including Blades of the Guardians, Panda Plan 2: The Magical Tribe, and Night King.
The result? Similarly sparse attendance across the board.
“It’s not just mine that has no viewers, all the screenings have no viewers,” he said.
Which is not surprising given that it was already a week after CNY and most people had already returned to school or work.
In his caption, Jack also expressed frustration over what he described as repeated attempts to smear the film and spread false information. While he said he usually ignores such “haters”, this time he wanted to “show everyone their true colours”.
Jack noted that the screenshots were taken of showtimes of the following day, and questioned why, when multiple films were experiencing low turnout, only Liang Po Po Vs Ah Beng was singled out.
