Jolin Tsai Had Super Awkward Reaction When Asked About Her Views On China-Taiwan Tensions

The Taiwanese singer must have been thinking: "How do I get out of this?"

Tensions are once again at a high point between China and Taiwan after Beijing launched new military drills around Taiwan on Monday (Oct 14).

The Chinese military, known as the People's Liberation Army (PLA), described the latest exercise as a “stern warning” after Taiwanese President Lai Ching Te reiterated last week that Taiwan and China are not subordinate to each other.

While many Taiwanese celebrities like Ouyang Nana and Angela Chang reshared Chinese state broadcaster CCTV’s post declaring that “Taiwan has been China’s territory since ancient times”, as well as pictures of drills on their Weibo accounts to show their support, there were some that remained silent, like Jolin Tsai.

So when the 44-year-old singer made an appearance at an event in Taipei earlier this week, the media took the opportunity to ask for her views on the tensions in cross-strait relations.

And h
er reaction was priceless.

Jolin, who just a few seconds ago, was breezily sharing about her upcoming album, froze and stared at the reporter.

Her team quickly stepped in to block the question and Jolin heaved a sigh of relief, grinning awkwardly at the cameras.

Here's what we think went through her mind:

Uh oh! Help! How do I get out of this?
Heng ah! Thanks guys, you helped me dodge a bullet.
Just smile and everything will be fine.

Jolin has never expressed her political views.

When former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in 2022, many Taiwanese stars reposted CCTV’s "One China" statement on Weibo.

Jolin did not take a stance at the time, which angered many Chinese fans, who labelled her as "pro-Taiwan independence".

As a result, she lost 300,000 followers on Weibo.
