Jessica Hsuan Adopts 14-Year-Old Dog She Fostered During Super Typhoon Ragasa
Adopting instead of buying a pet is an act of kindness, but choosing to adopt a senior animal takes next-level compassion, especially when you know they are living their golden years.
Hong Kong actress Jessica Hsuan recently opened her heart and home to a 14-year-old mixed-breed dog and adorably named him Sailo Hsuan.
The 55-year-old initially fostered Sailo and another dog when animal shelters made an urgent plea for help as Super Typhoon Ragasa battered Hong Kong.
With shelters in the New Territories facing floods and power outages, Jessica reached out to take in the dogs to keep them safe.
Sailo had been abandoned by his previous owner before finding refuge at an animal shelter.
After the typhoon passed and most foster were returned, Jessica realised she couldn’t bear to part ways with her furry friends and wanted to adopt both of them, but Sailo’s companion already had an adopter waiting.
The Star Awards 2025 Best Actress winner shared on Instagram last Thursday (Oct 2) that she took Sailo for a vet check-up, wishing for good results.
Sailo now joins Jessica’s bustling home of four dogs and three cats, all in their senior years, proving she has a soft spot for older animals.
This isn’t new for Jessica. Back in a 2019 interview, she once said she learnt the meaning of life and death and the beauty of letting go when she was studying in the UK.
“When I was young, I only knew I loved animals and wanted to give them the best of everything to prolong their life, and give them the best care. I still remember my first dog, when he turned 13 or 14 and started having health problems, I was terrified because I had never faced death before. I didn’t know how it would feel,” she said.
However, Jessica had a friend who advised that she look at things from an animal’s perspective.
“If I had a terminal illness and couldn’t be saved, let me go. Don’t force me to stay. Animals have the privilege of being allowed to go peacefully. Humans don’t. Don’t hold on just because you can’t bear to let go. That’s selfish and it’ll only make them suffer,” she recalled.
