So much for holiday cheer.

Jay Chou Just Dropped A Christmas Song , But Some Netizens Are Saying It "Sounds Awful”

Jay Chou, 44, is known as the King of Mandopop, and for good reason. Over the past two decades, many of his songs, such as ‘Chrysanthemum Terrace’ (菊花台) and ‘Love Confession’ (告白气球), have become staples on any Mandopop lover's Spotify playlist.

Jay can do no wrong when it comes to producing hits, but it seems even he is not immune to receiving harsh criticism about his work.

On Thursday (Dec 21), Jay released the single ‘Christmas Star’ (聖誕星) just in time for the festive season. Within the first 20 hours of its release, the music video had already garnered close to two million views.

Unfortunately, ‘Christmas Star’ has gone viral on Weibo for all the wrong reasons. The keywords that appear alongside the song title the most? “Sounds awful."

The top search on Weibo in relation in Jay's song is "sounds awful"

Netizens didn’t hold back on their criticism, calling the song “awful” and “dull”. One even said they “couldn’t get past half of the song before turning it off”.

Perhaps the most ruthless comment was the one that said “Jay has used up all his talent”.

It didn’t take long for Jay fans to jump in to defend their idol.

“This is ‘using up all his talent’? Why don’t you write a song yourself then,” retorted a fan.

“You lot are so irritating, he’s been massively successful for such a long time,” wrote another.

Others took a more civilised approach, saying those who didn’t like the song could’ve simply said “it was average” instead of labelling it as “awful”.

“It gets catchy once you listen to it a couple more times,” offered one suggestion.

While the keyboard war between Jay's fans and haters is still ongoing on Weibo, the majority of comments on the song's music video on YouTube are complimentary, with many just happy to be basking in the holiday feels.

We’ve embedded the song below so you can form your own opinions on Jay’s festive track. Thoughts, anyone?
