HK Actor Jason Wong, Who Was Slashed In The Face Last Year, Says His Drug-Addled Attacker Mistook Him For His Movie Character
The assailant has since been sentenced to 10 years in prison, and Jason has urged his showbiz friends to be careful in public as they, too, may become targets of unprovoked attacks by people who have mental disorders.
Hong Kong actor Jason Wong, 44, was badly wounded from an attack at a restaurant in Shenzhen last August.
The assailant slashed Jason’s face, left hand, and waist with a kitchen knife, and the actor was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he underwent several surgeries. He also received 100 stitches on his face.
Following the harrowing incident, Jason said he did not offend anyone, and believed his attacker had “recognised the wrong person”.
Earlier this month (Apr 3), it was reported that Jason's assailant was convicted of intentional homicide, and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
On Wednesday (Apr 26), Jason released a statement, revealing that his attacker was under the influence of drugs and had mistook him for a character he played in 2017 movie, Chasing The Dragon.
Jason wrote: “The court found out that the assailant had a history of abusing methamphetamine for more than 10 years, and has the habit of abusing cough syrup. After taking cough syrup, he experienced hallucinations, auditory hallucinations and delusions. He also watched the movie Chasing The Dragon, which I appeared in, and mistook me for my character ‘Comic’, which he believed to be his uncle. [He believed] I meant his family harm, and as he couldn’t differentiate fiction from reality, developed a deep resentment towards me, and had the intent to kill me. He bought the kitchen knife that he used to attack me with the purpose of exacting revenge.”
Jason went on to emphasise that he does not know the assailant , and has “no bad blood” with him. He believed the attack to be an “innocent disaster” and attributed his serious injuries to “extreme misfortune”.
He also urged his showbiz pals to look out for their own safety, writing: “I also want to remind my friends in showbiz that due to their image as public figures, they may become targets of unprovoked attacks by people who have mental disorders. As such, [my] friends must be careful and vigilant when entering and leaving public places.”
The actor extended his gratitude to those who have been providing him assistance, including Louis Koo, who sent him S$9K to help with his medical fees, and actor Frankie Ng, who was there when the attack happened.
He also expressed his thanks to the Shenzhen authorities in charge of investigating the case.
Jason then ended off his statement by revealing that he is now well on the mend. “At present, I have recovered from most of my injuries, and I will continue receiving treatment in order to make a full recovery,” he wrote.
Over the past few months, the actor has returned to Weibo to post videos and photos of himself attending work events and working out at the gym, further proving that he is making a speedy recovery. He no longer appears to have any visible facial scars from the attack as well.
