When it comes to gift-giving, they say that it's the thought that counts. But what if that thought involves a lie?

Taiwanese actress Janet Lee (李蒨蓉), 44, recently went on social media to reveal how her husband Alan Lee, a billionaire CEO of a sports shoes company, had spawned a two-decade long fib.

Last week, Janet took to her Facebook to share that her husband got her a green Rolex for her birthday about 18 years ago.

As we all know, Rolexes can cost a small fortune, so it's definitely a great b-day gift.

Janet, however, said she didn't wear her Rolex much as it did not suit her style.

One day, she took it out, only to realise that it had stopped working. She then brought it to a shop that specialises in repairing luxury watches.

There, a shocked Janet was told that her Rolex was actually a counterfeit one, and that they would not help fix it.

The staff at the shop also recognised Janet, which left her feeling extremely embarrassed.

"My face looked green as the watch!," she recalled.

At that time, Janet went home to confront her husband for getting her a fake Rolex. Alan, who also got the same watch for himself, replied: "How could that be? Was I scammed?"

Alan said he bought the watches from a shop in Hong Kong. He later asked a Hong Kong friend to return the watches and get a refund.

Guys, please don't learn from Alan...

But it looks like there's a major plot twist to the story, 18 years on.

When Janet brought the incident up to her husband recently, he actually confessed that he "knew long ago that the watch was a fake".

That left Janet in utter disbelief.

"It's been 18 years, I always thought that my husband was conned! But no! I'm the one who got scammed by my husband!" she said.

"Stupid man! You knew it's fake but you still gave it to me, so ridiculous!," she ranted.

Janet subsequently left a comment saying she got her husband's consent before posting the story.

"Husbands, please do not learn from this! If you give a gift to your wife, it should come from your heart! If you want to give her something that's counterfeit, you must tell her honestly!" advised Janet.
