Jacqueline Wong Contemplated Suicide Following Andy Hui Cheating Scandal
In a new interview, the ex TVB actress also revealed that she wanted to issue a public apology but was stopped by the Hong Kong broadcaster.
Almost five years after former TVB actress Jacqueline Wong was caught in a career-ending affair with Sammi Cheng’s husband, Hong Kong singer Andy Hui, she is finally ready to talk about the cheating scandal.
In an interview with radio station Commercial Radio Hong Kong, the 34-year-old, who made her showbiz comeback as a singer-songwriter last year, opened up about the emotional roller coaster she went through in the aftermath of the scandal.
Jacqueline revealed that before the scandal broke, she had caught wind that the affair would be exposed.
"To be honest, before the news broke, I was afraid that the matter would be exposed. I was constantly worried, like a bomb waiting to explode. So when the news came out, I felt calm inside. But after that, my emotions were in a completely different world,” she said.
Sharing that she had suicidal thoughts, Jacqueline recalled, “I wondered if I should disappear from this world. Many friends immediately rushed over to keep an eye on me, but I was in a really bad emotional state.”
Jacqueline felt deep remorse towards her family, especially her father and sister, actress Scarlett Wong, who were constantly harassed by the paparazzi and is very thankful that they did not bear grudges against her.
"With my mental state at that moment, I don't think I would be able to handle it. I felt very guilty because after the incident, my family was harassed, and their lives were also affected. There were reporters camped downstairs at their apartment," she revealed.
Jacqueline had wanted to make a public apology but was prohibited by TVB.
"I remember a day before the [scandal broke], I asked the company if we should hold a press conference to issue an apology, but they were afraid of public backlash and inquiries, so they advised against it for the time being,” she said.
There was a moment of impulsiveness when she wanted to go downstairs to meet the press and apologise, but was stopped by her friend.
While she later issued a brief statement through her manager, apologising to her family, TVB, and then-boyfriend, actor Kenneth Ma, many felt Jacqueline owed Sammi an apology.
“Later, there were various news reports [about the scandal] and the company decided not to hold a press conference. I couldn't do it alone, so I left Hong Kong,” she explained.
Jacqueline fled to the United States to avoid public backlash, and only returned to Hong Kong after eight months.
