Even then, he has no interest in renting out his many properties. Why?

With performances cancelled and filming projects postponed the past two years due to the pandemic, it’s not uncommon to hear of celebrities lamenting about the lack of income.

But we were not expecting it from Heavenly King Jacky Cheung, especially not after he declared that he has a habit of saving up.

In the past, he used to take on acting jobs to supplement income

In an interview on a Hong Kong news programme earlier this year, Jacky, 61, shared that in the past, his income from singing wasn’t stable, so he had to rely on acting to supplement his income.

"Back then, I didn't know how much I could earn from singing and if it could sustain my livelihood. But with acting, I know. For example, if I shot seven movies that year, I know how much money I made... so for a period, it was my main source of income," he explained.

It was only after he began receiving more performing opportunities that he cut back on acting, only accepting roles that he was interested in or when he had to return a favour.

And while he had several jobs and performances lined up in recent years, they did not materialise due to the pandemic.

“I haven’t had any income in recent years,” he said.

And it doesn’t help that he is very conservative when it comes to investments, preferring low-risk options.

When the host suggested he rent out his many properties for some passive income, Jacky dismissed the idea, saying his properties are all for his own use.

He also doesn’t want to deal with the stress of being a landlord.

“Being a landlord is hard work. If the window leaks, it’s my problem, even when there’s a typhoon and it’s obviously not my fault … If there’s a leak from the unit upstairs, it’s also my problem, when the pipe burst I have to fix it. There are a lot of issues,” he said.
